Military Medal 'This NCO was in command of No 9 Platoon in the advance on Messines on 7th June 1917, and also acted as Company Sergeant Major. His coolness in helping to set the men to work under shell fire when digging in, and encouraging them in an exhausted state, was instrumental in getting the trench in such order that when the heaviest shelling was experienced there was ample cover for his men and few casualties resulted. Sergeant Thompson landed on Gallipoli with the Main Body and his work in the trenches and on parade has always been exemplary.'
