During the attack on the 8th October, and at a moment when the enemy advanced in large numbers towards our lines from Lesdain, it seemed as if a counter attack on our flank was imminent. Sergeant Thompson, with a small party, rushed towards the edge of a cliff but were held down by an enemy machine-gun. Sergeant Thompson then worked his way forward, shot the machine gunner in the head, and turned the gun on the enemy inflicting many casualties.'
