Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous courage and daring initiative. During the attack on Avesnes les Bapaume on 25th August, 1918, he single handed engaged with rifle fire an enemy bombing post which was holding up the flank of his company, afterwards collecting some men and rushing the post and killing or capturing the garrison. Later in the same operation he showed considerable gallantry and leadership in mopping up the captured area, quickly overcoming machine gun opposition and sending back prisoners.'
