Mentioned in Despatches 'Operations Messines: 7th June 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the battle of Messines this man did especially good work. During the advance made by his Company, the machine gun fire was severe at certain points. He located one of the enemy guns in action, which meant heavy casualties if it remained in action. Pte Thompson with another man rushed forward and captured the gun, heedless of their own personal safety. He had just completed his task when he was killed by a fragment of shell.'
