Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on the Passchendaele ridge on the 12th October 1917. He led his machine guns through
heavy shell fire, and reconnoitred under very heavy machine gun fire, for positions from which he could cover the Infantry. He showed an entire disregard for danger throughout the operations and was indefatigable in his attentions to the wounded,
in spite of heavy sniping.'
Source: London Gazette Date: Military Medal 'For great courage and devotion to duty. On 7th June 1917, Corporal Thom, who was in charge of a party of men, established an ammunition dump beyond Messines.
He afterwards returned to the starting point and carried forward gun gear and more ammunition, having to pass a heavy enemy barrage. At all times his example gave confidence to the men of his section and greatly assisted the work of the group.'
