War service: Egypt Enlisted with rank of trumpeter and posted to Brigade Ammunition Column, New Zealand Field Artillery, 8 September 1914. Proceeded overseas from Wellington on board HMNZT No 10 'Arawa', 16 October 1914. Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 3 December 1914. Admitted to 17th General Hospital, Alexandria, 21 June 1915 (influenza/severe bronchitis). Transferred to Enteric Fever Convalescent Camp, Port Said, 28 August 1915 (severe enteritis). Recommended to be sent back to New Zealand for 'a change of air', Medical Report on Invalid, Enteric Fever Convalescent Camp, Port Said, 9 September 1915. Commenced return to New Zealand from Egypt on board HMNZT No 28 'Tofua', 24 September 1915. Found guilty, 17 October 1915, of 1 breaking out of ship, 2 direct disobedience of orders, 3 being absent without leave: awarded 72 hours detention. Disembarked in Auckland, 27 October 1915. Discharged in consequence of being medically unfit for Active Service, although fit for employment in civil life, 23 March 1916.
