Embarked Wellington, 19 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 25 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp.

Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 8 December 1916, and posted to C Company.

Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gassed), and admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 47th General Hospital, Le Treport, 8 June 1917; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 22 June 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 24 August 1917.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 12 October 1917.

Court of Enquiry, 25 April 1918, concluded: 'Killed in action, 12 October 1917.'

Statement, 26/651 Sergeant W.H. YORKE, D Company, 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade: 'I saw Rfm. Tattersall wounded in the arm in advance of the assembly trenches on the morning of the 12th Oct. & did not see him again. At the time I saw him he was making his way out towards the dressing station.'
