Embarked Wellington, 23 September 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 November 1916, and marched into Sling Camp.

Proceeded overseas to France, 9 December 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 7 January 1917.

Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 10 February 1917 (accidental abrasions, right hand: septic thumb'; 'The disability is of a comparatively trivial nature & in all probability will not interfere with his future efficiency as a soldier. Officer states injury occurred whilst on duty & soldier in no way to blame'); transferred to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 12 February 1917; to No 30 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 13 February 1917; to England, 15 February 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; transferred to NZ Convalescent Camp, Hornchurch, 10 March 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 25 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 9 July 1917.

Wounded in action, 12 October 1917.
