Military Medal 'Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. From 23rd to 29th August in the operations near Bapaume this NCO was in charge of the linemen at his Brigade Forward Station. Utterly regardless of his own safety he worked time after time under the heaviest fire between the Brigade Forward Station and the Headquarters of Battalion in the line. For three days and nights, during a period when hostile shelling was continuous and when telephonic communication was of the utmost
importance, he continued his work on the lines almost unceasingly. On one occasion he was half buried by the explosion of a shell, but undaunted he continued to carry on his work and to assist his men. His untiring devotion to duty was beyond all praise, and his resolute bravery and splendid leadership not only had the greatest effect on his men but also resulted in the maintenance of the
Brigade communications during a most important period.'
