Admitted to No.16 Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros, 10 August 1915 (shell wound, abdomen); transferred to HS 'Georgian', 14 August 1915; to HS 'Aquitania', (shell wounds, multiple); disembarked Southampton, 23 August 1915 (gunshot wounds, left leg, both arms); to King George Military Hospital, 4 September 1915; discharged to furlough, 22 September 1915; marched into Weymouth Depot, 17 October 1915.

Found guilty, 17 October 1915, of (1) drunk in town; (2) disorderly conduct and using obscene language; (3) giving wrong name; (4) striking a NCO: awarded 14 days' detention and forfeits 14 days' pay.

Marched into NZ Base Depot, Grey Towers, 14 January 1916.

Proceeded overseas to Egypt, 24 March 1916.

Embarked Port Said to join the British Expeditionary Force, 13 April 1916; marched into NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 24 April 1915.

Rejoined unit, in the field, 8 June 1916.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 8 August 1916, of (1) absent without leave in the field from 1530 hours, until 2145 hours, 25 July 1916; (2) hesitating to obey a command; (3) making insubordinate language outside an officer's dugout; (4) behaving in a disorderly manner at Company Orderly Room: sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour and forfeits 1 days' pay.

Marched in No.1 Military Prison, 8 August 1916.

Sentence suspended, 17 January 1917; rejoined unit, 19 January 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 31 August 1917; rejoined unit, 13 September 1917.

Attached No.3 Field Company, NZ Engineers, 28 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 2 October 1917 (gunshot wound, left hand); admitted to No.1 ANZAC Central Bureau, 2 October 1917; transferred to No.2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 2 October 1917; to No.2 Australian General Hospital, Wimerueux, 2 October 1917; to England, 5 October 1917; to No.2 NZ General Hospital, Walton on Thames, 5 October 1917; classifed as medically unfit by Medical Board, 10 November 1917; discharged to sick leave, 13 November 1917.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth on board HS 'Maheno', 24 December 1917; disembarked New Zealand, 3 February 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action), 4 June 1918.
