Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations at Grevillers and Bancourt on the 24th and 30th August and 1st September Pte Stokes was a stretcher bearer, and throughout the operations displayed great bravery. He worked continuously clearing the field of wounded though all the time under heavy shell and machine gun fire. His conduct was of the highest order, and set a splendid example throughout the operations.'
