Medaille Militaire (France)

'At High Wood, Somme on 20th September 1916, when the 15th Battery position behind High Wood was heavily shelled with 15cm shell and gas shell. Sergeant Rankin and Gunner Playfair where casualties and Sergeant (then Gunner) Stewart at great personal risk rendered immediate assistance to them both and succeeded in getting Sergeant Rankin to a dressing station under heavy and continuous fire. During the night 20th/21st September the Battery and the vicinity were again heavily shelled especially with gas shells and throughout the shelling, Sergeant Stewart rendered very valuable work in tending wounded and getting them away. On both occasions as on previous and many subsequent occasions he displayed the utmost coolness and courage, setting a splendid example to other men in his unit. His devotion to duty, coolness and courage under fire have been most marked ever since the Division came to France, and I strongly recommend him for the award of the Medaille Militaire.'

This NCO's work since arrival of the battery in France (April 1916) has been excellent and is worthy of reward. He was through the Somme fighting with the Battery (September to October 1916) and throughout was responsible for maintenance of communications under very heavy fire of all descriptions. He has always displayed the greatest coolness under fire. He has been previously recommended for specific gallantry.'
