Embarked Wellington, 2 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 10 June 1917; marched into Sling Camp, and reverted to Temporary Lance Corporal, 11 June 1917.

Reverted to the ranks at own request, 11 June 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; joined 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 9 August 1917, and posted to B Company.

Reported missing, 12 October 1917.

Statement, Captain E.C. HEDGE, 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade (patient, 2nd London General Hospital, Chelsea), 26 February 1918: 'I know that Rifleman Staub was badly wounded in the back on 12th. October, 1917 in the German trenches that we took on Passchendaele Ridge. He was taken to the Dressing Station and died there, and was buried at Kronprintz Farm, East of Passchendaele. There was no time to erect a cross over the grave.'

Grave subsequently lost.

Court of Enquiry, 18 April 1918, concluded: 'Killed in action, 12 October 1917'.
