Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This NCO was in charge of the Bearer Relay Post on the Lock of the Canal de L'Escaut. In the early morning of 7th October, when his Bearer Relay post and route of evacuation were being heavily shelled he was not content with merely supervising the work of his bearers but personally assisted each squad on the bridge, the most dangerous portion of the carry. His coolness and utter disregard of danger set an example which encouraged his bearers to cope with a task of the most difficult and dangerous nature.'
