'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations against Polderhoek, on 3rd December, from midday onwards this man work incessantly from the commencement of the attack regardless of very heavy enemy shelling and machine gun fire, carrying and tending the wounded. He and another stretcher bearer carried wounded throughout the day back to the regimental aid post and did not cease till the whole battlefield was cleared of all our wounded men, which was not until late in the night of 3rd December. The next day, 4th December a wounded man was reported to be lying out in front of our lines, Private Stainton immediately volunteered to go out and bring the wounded man in. This he did in broad daylight, and in full view of the enemy positions, and brought the man in, although sniped at continually. During a very heavy enemy bombardment of our trenches on 5th December. This man again showed great gallantry in going out at the commencement, and working continuously in rescuing and carrying back the wounded to the regimental aid post. His conduct throughout the operations were a magnificent example to all men: his bravery and utter disregard of his own personal safety were beyond praise, and he undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades.'
