Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Near Salesches, on the 23rd October 1918, when his Battalion attacked, Lance Corporal Smyth, at great
personal risk, set up, under heavy machine gun and shell fire, a transmitting visual signalling station, and throughout the day maintained it. This was the only means of communication and though at times the enemy fire was terrific, this NCO remained at his post and rendered very valuable service. His endurance and devotion to duty called for the highest praise from all who was at it.'
