'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the Passchendaele Offensive Operations on the 12th October 1917. After two N.C.O.'s of his platoons had been killed, he personally gathered two sections and led them forward in the attack. Up to the time he was wounded he handled these sections with skill and courage.'
