'Messines Offensive ? 7th to 9th June 1917. In the attack on Messines L/Cpl Smith who was in command of the Bombing Section in his Platoon, by his courage and cheerfulness in the advance, and in the exhausting work of digging in under shell fire, set such an example to his men that the Trench was completed before the heaviest bombardment opened, thus saving casualties. This NCO has never been away from his Company since he landed on Gallipoli on August 7th 1915, and his work in the trenches has always been excellent.'
