Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry during the operations around Bapaume from August 28th to September 2nd 1918. When his Platoon was held up and was suffering
casualties from an enemy machine gun, Rifleman Smith went out alone into the open with his Lewis gun, and, though under heavy fire he gallantly kept his gun in
action and silenced the fire from the enemy machine gun post.'
