Croix de Guerre (Belgium) 'For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. During the attack on the enemy's positions near Metz, about 10th September 1918, Corporal Smith led his section
forward and notwithstanding that half of them had become casualties he succeeded in reaching his objective and consolidating the position. His coolness under heavy shell and machine gun fire inspired his section with confidence and
determination. He has at all times shown disregard for his own personal safety in the face of enemy fire.'
