War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 29 July 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 28 September 1916, and marched in to 5th Reserve Bn, Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 10 October 1916; joined 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 29 October 1916, and posted to A Company. Detached to 3rd Canadian Tunnelling Company, 13 March 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 10 April 1917. Found guilty, 25 April 1917, of being absent without leave from 6 am to 8.45 pm, 22 April 1917: deprived of 10% pay gross, and forfeited 1% pay by Royal Warrant. Killed in action, 7 June 1917.
