War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 1 April 1916; disembarked Suez, 3 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 20 May 1916. Admitted to hospital, Etaples, 28 May 1916. Appointed Cook, 8 June 1916; relinquished appointment of Cook, 5 July 1916. Joined 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 6 July 1916, and posted to B Company. Found guilty, 12 October 1916, of when on Active Service being absent without leave from 9 pm, 10 October, to 8 am, 11 October 1916: deprived of 7 days' pay, and forfeited 1 day's pay under Royal Warrant. Detached to Reinforcements Camp, 30 May 1917. Acted as Cook, 1-18 June 1917. Detached for duty as Baggage Guard, 2 July 1917; rejoined unit, 11 July 1917.
