'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations about Bapaume on the 24th August 1918, Private Sims, with the NCO in command, took up a position with their Lewis gun in an advanced post, and although outflanked, held on with great determination. Private Sims and his comrade were the only remaining members of the Lewis gun crew, nevertheless they continued firing on the enemy and inflicting severe losses until their supply of ammunition became exhausted and they were compelled to withdraw.'
