'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while acting as brigade forward observation officer. The situation being obscure, he proceeded in front of the Infantry and made a daring reconnaissance under heavy fire, locating a large enemy force massing for attack and effectively bringing artillery fire to bear on them. He also personally took seven of the enemy prisoners. He rendered splendid service.'
