Croix de Guerre (Belgium) 'For conspicuous gallantry bravery and devotion to duty during the operations around Bapaume and near Gouzeaucourt from August 26th to September 13th 1918. On the 9th and 12th September while acting as Company Runner he succeeded in penetrating several times the enemy barrage in rear of companies and brought back information of great value. Stopping Officers as he went round the line he would on his own initiative collect information and bring back sketches of dispositions of the greatest importance. Other runners with him had become casualties, but he worked to and from the front line and displayed the greatest
contempt for danger.'
