'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Bancourt on the 30th August 1918. This man during the advance when his platoon was hung up by a hostile machine gun, rushed forward and from an exposed position engaged the enemy, allowing the hostile gun to be rushed. Later during the consolidation of the position gained, he crept forward and by skilful handling of his gun, kept hostile machine gun fire down until his platoon had rushed the position and the machine gun was knocked out. Afterwards, at dusk, he crept forward, salvaged a German gun, and brought it into action. He displayed great initiatives and daring throughout the action.'
