Military Medal 'Operations during Somme advance August/September 1918. On the morning of 4/9/18 this NCO was in charge of Org Patrol and went forward through Vauxwood in an easterly direction, the wood at this time being subjected to intense high
explosive and gas shell fire. Showing disregard for his personal safety he pushed on to the canal where his party were fired on heavily by enemy machine guns. He got his party under cover and went forward alone and succeeded in obtaining valuable info as to the disposition of the enemy and this enabled our troops to advance with full info. This NCO has on this and other occasions shown a splendid example to his men by his devotion to duty.'
