War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 16 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 December 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp, and reverted to the ranks. Qualified as 1st Class Signaller, 21 April 1917. Taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, and posted to 8th Company, 24 April 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917. Detached to School of Instruction, 18 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 24 June 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 18 July 1917. Admitted to 8th Division Rest Station, 30 August 1917; rejoined Bn, 26 September 1917. Detached to School of Instruction, 23 October 1917; rejoined Bn, 27 November 1917. Proceeded on leave, 28 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 8 February 1918. Attached to XXII Corps Reinforcements Camp, Abeele, 8 February 1918; rejoined Bn, 22 February 1918.
