Embarked Wellington, 16 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 December 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp, and reverted to the ranks.

Qualified as 1st Class Signaller, 21 April 1917.

Taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, and posted to 8th Company, 24 April 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917.

Detached to School of Instruction, 18 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 24 June 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 18 July 1917.

Admitted to 8th Division Rest Station, 30 August 1917; rejoined Bn, 26 September 1917.

Detached to School of Instruction, 23 October 1917; rejoined Bn, 27 November 1917.

Proceeded on leave, 28 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 8 February 1918.

Attached to XXII Corps Reinforcements Camp, Abeele, 8 February 1918; rejoined Bn, 22 February 1918.

Wounded in action, 2 April 1918 (shrapnel wound, left shoulder and scalp), and admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to 8th British Casualty Clearing Station, 3 April 1918; to No 1 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 6 April 1918; to England, 7 April 1918, and admitted to Southwark Military Hospital; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 1 May 1918; to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 23 May 1918.

Appointed Acting Sergeant while attending Signals School, Dunstable, 4 September 1918; relinquished Acting Rank on return from Signals School, 6 December 1918.

Commenced return to New Zealand from London on board HT 'Hororata', 1 February 1919; discharged (termination of period of engagement), 14 April 1919.
