'On 30th August and during the night of 30/31st. August during the operations east of Bapaume this NCO worked unceasingly on the lines to the Battalions of his Brigade. He was out under very heavy enemy artillery and machine gun fire, but he worked with the greatest courage and determination not only inspiring has men with confidence but materially contributing to the success of the Brigade Communications. On previous and subsequent days during the same operations his conduct was a fine example of unselfish gallantry.'

Military Medal

'In the advance on the Gravenstafel Ridge position on 4th October Cpl Rowe was with the forward signal detachment of 1st New Zealand Infantry Brigade. Subjected to enemy barrage fire for half an hour previous to zero and subsequently under fairly heavy fire for several hours. The forward station was established 1 hour and 20 minutes after zero, and from that time communication was continuous by one means or another. This satisfactory result was largely due to Cpl Rowe who worked untiringly, and with a single mind to his work, and set a fine example to the men under him.'
