Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on the 26th day of March 1918 north east of Mailly Maillet. This NCO carried out specially good work. When his platoon commander was wounded he carried on with keenness and dash. He carried out special work with another Company of the Battalion in which his platoon suffered heavy casualties. Although wounded himself and having lost the use of one arm he refused to leave his men but carried on in the trench. He helped wounded men, bandaging their wounds with the unhurt hand. His work with the wounded undoubtedly saved the lives of many men who would have otherwise bled to death. He then, with the assistance of others carried these wounded men out far enough for them to be taken charge of by other people, though his arm was broken and he had several other wounds about the head and body. His work and courage was of a very high standard and he would not leave the trenches until ordered to do so.'
