Military Medal 'Action: Goose Alley and Drop Alley, night of 20/21st September 1916, West of Flers. During the attack and counter-attacks on the night of the 20/21st September 1916, when the 2nd Canterbury Batt. took, lost and retook Drop Alley and Goose Alley, three times between 1 and 5am on the 21st Private J.D. Ross in the early morning, led a bombing party which finally retook a German sap which had changed hands several times during the night. He showed great coolness and courage under continuous heavy bomb fire.'
