During the assault on the Switch Trench on the 15th September all of the officers of this non-commissioned officer's company became casualties very early. This N.C.O. immediately assumed command of the company, and after successfully taking the trench showed great coolness and initiative in organising working parties and consolidating the trench under heavy shellfire.'
