'For gallantry and devotion to duty as Battalion sniping and scouting sergeant. His energy, keenness and reliability in trench warfare, in active operations has been the means of obtaining information of an extremely valuable nature. He has proved himself to be an intrepid leader of patrols by day as well as by night. He is at present in Hospital suffering from wounds received while close to the enemy's wire. His courage and reliability have been throughout a most inspiring example to all ranks.'
