War service: Western Front Embarked Dunedin, 21 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 25 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 4 December 1916, and posted to 10th Company. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 15 February 1917 (scabies); transferred to Northumbrian Casualty Clearing Station, 18 February 1917; rejoined Bn, 6 March 1917. Detached to No 5 NZ Light Railway Operating Section, 20 March 1917; rejoined Bn, 8 April 1917. Found guilty, 9 July 1917, of being absent from 9 pm Roll Call, 7 July 1917: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2. Found guilty, 24 August 1917, of (1) being absent from Camp whilst on Light Duty; (2) being absent from Tattoo Roll Call, 9 pm, 23 August 1917: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 14 days' full pay.
