Military Cross

'Action: Capture of Switch Trench and advance on Flers, 14th September 1916, and following days. As Brigade Major of the 2nd New Zealand Infantry Brigade, Captain Richardson has done excellent work, and especially in reconnoitring forward positions. He shows untiring energy in the performance of his duties. He has a very good eye for the country, and is of great service to the Brigade. He has shown the greatest gallantry under heavy shell fire on three successive occasions whilst reconnoitring the enemy?s positions.'

Distinguished Service Order

'Messines Offensive: 7th to 9th June 1917. Ploegsteert Operations 12th to 18th June. Major Richardson as Brigade Major of this Brigade, has shown the greatest devotion to duty, and an utter disregard for danger at all times. His work on reconnaissance during the offensive operations was of the greatest value to this Brigade. During the 2nd Phase of operations in the Ploegsteert sector, this officer reconnoitred forward positions continually under intense fire and brought back valuable information, the importance which cannot be over estimated. I consider he is worthy of special recognition for his valuable services.'
