Military Medal 'For very gallant conduct in the attack on Messines on 7th June 1916 particularly when as one of the party of five he assisted in driving a strong enemy party from the cellar of the Institute Royal which had been organised for defence. The enemy suffered loss altogether out of proportion to the strength of the attacking party having about 20 killed before they finally withdrew. Rifleman Ray fought with the greatest coolness and courage and it was largely through his efforts that an attempt by the enemy to rush three wounded men of his party who had taken shelter was frustrated. He always set a very high example and can be relied upon in a tight place.'
