Military Medal 'Operations Gravenstafel 29th September 1917 to 5th October 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As Company Runner during operations in the Wieltje Sector on 29th September, he carried at night through a dense fog an urgent message across 1500 yards of extremely difficult country under heavy shell fire; he had not been over the ground before nor had he studied it in daylight. On the following night after returning from a run it appeared that a
detached post was being raided, he immediately volunteered to go and obtain information This he did under a heavy barrage.'
