Medals

Croix de Guerre (Belgium)

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advances on the 24th August 1918, near Bapaume, Sergeant Blackburn controlled and led his platoon through the enemy machine gun and artillery barrage and consolidated a position from which his platoon using their Lewis guns and rifles, assisted in disorganising the enemy who were massing for counter attack. During the attack at Haplincourt on the 2nd September 1918, he again showed great control and initiative when his platoon was held up by machine gun fire. He salvaged a German machine-gun with which he neutralised the enemy fire thus enabling his section to outflank the enemy strong point and capture the garrison.'

Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 23rd October 1918, in the operations near Salesches, the Company to which Sergeant Blackburn belonged, on obtaining its objective, came under heavy machine gun fire. Sergeant Blackburn at great personal risk, advanced alone over fire swept ground, and marked down these guns. Returning, he brought up our own Lewis guns and put the enemy out of action, thus enabling patrols to go on. His section saved casualties, and his example inspired the men who saw him. Throughout the entire operation this NCO rendered very valuable service.'
