Croix de Guerre (Belgium) 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in the Field during the operations north of Hebuterne on the 20th July 1918. This NCO was in charge of a party of 5 men detailed to clear Fish Alley of the enemy. They were held up by an enemy machine gun which subjected them to very heavy fire. This NCO immediately grasped the situation, and employed two men to keep the enemy's head down while he worked up the sap alone and got within bombing distance. By this method he worked his way down the sap about 200 yards, having killed four of the
enemy with his bombs. He then dashed forward, shot the gunner with his revolver, put the remainder of the enemy to flight and captured the machine gun.
Throughout he showed great skill in handling his men and the success of the enterprise was due to his personal bravery.'
