Mentioned in Despatches 'Operations Somme: 25th September to 4th October 1916. Recommended for devotion to duty at all times, and in particular when in charge of an ammunition dump at Flers (23rd September-3rd October 1916). Although this dump was heavily
shelled by the enemy. Captain (then 2nd Lieutenant) Rae stuck to his post, and carried out his duties without hesitation, with the result that at no time did the unit want for any of the necessaries for fighting, this in spite of the fact that this Officer has been wounded in the neck and ordered back to the Dressing Station, to
which he did not go until 40 hours had elapsed, as he knew that ammunition, etc were urgently wanted. On coming out of the Somme Captain Rae was given
command of a company, although then only a 2nd Lieutenant, and has controlled this company with such ability, that he is one of my most trusted Officers. He has the faculty of commanding men and of keeping them cheery under all conditions
