Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Hebuterne on 15th July 1918 his Company was engaged in minor operations and after reaching the objective he volunteered to go forward and reconnoitre the sap in front which was believed to
hold an enemy post. He worked down the sap and found the enemy who were at that time apparently endeavouring to reorganise and were completely surprised. He threw a bomb which put the enemy to flight and following up his advantage succeeded in catching and bayonetting two of the party. He made careful observation of the position from that part of the trench and brought back information which enabled his platoon to move forward some 200 yards to the position his Company finally consolidated. His contempt of danger and his initiative were an inspiration to all his comrades and his fine work materially assisted in extending the gains already made by his platoon.'
