'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty on the night 1st/2nd. October, 1917 near St Julien. When engaged as wheel driver in delivery of Ammunition to Battery he ran into heavy shelling. In the darkness there was much confusion through various wagons and teams galloping to safety. Gunner Quinlan remained calmly unhooking teams and by his fearlessness inspired a like coolness in others, so that men and horses were safely withdrawn. Quinlan was the last to quit the locality.'
