Military Medal 'Operations: British front opposite Beaumont Hamel 26th March 1918 and subsequent days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During these operations, Corporal Black was in command of his company ration party. On 27th and 28th March and also on 5th April, this NCO, by his courageous behaviour, splendid determination and perseverance under very trying circumstances, delivered the rations for his company from the ration dump which were almost invariably made under very heavy shell fire, and although the ground was exceptionally heavy he carried out his duties most cheerfully and willingly and the splendid example he set his party by his fine conduct was undoubtedly the means by which his company was kept amply supplied with food and water.'
