War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 25 July 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 3 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Found guilty, 10 October 1916, of overstaying leave, 6-9 October 1916: deprived of 28 days' pay (gross), and forfeited 3 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Proceeded overseas to France, 20 October 1916; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 4 November 1916, and posted to D Company. Detached to Cable Burying Party, 13 March 1917; rejoined Bn, 5 April 1917. Found guilty, 29 May 1917, of being absent without leave: awarded 21 days' Field Punishment No 1, and forfeited 2 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Wounded in action, 9 June 1917 (gassed), and admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, 19 June 1917; discharged, 15 June 1917; rejoined Bn, 16 June 1917.
