Previously served in Egypt; returned to New Zealand as a venereal case. War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 8 January 1916; disembarked Suez, 12 February 1916. Transferred to NZ Field Artillery Brigade, 15 March 1916, and posted to 8th Battery. Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916. Taken on strength, 3rd Battery, in the field, 23 January 1917. Admitted to 2nd NZ Field Ambulance, 9 March 1917 (contusion, thigh: accidental); transferred to Divisional Rest Station, 9 March 1917; to Casualty Clearing Station, 13 March 1917; to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 15 March 1917; to England, 17 March 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames (injury rated as 'of trivial nature'; soldier in no way to blame); transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 30 March 1917; discharged to NZ Field Artillery Depot, Chadderton, 10 May 1917. Sum of 15/5 deducted from pay, 30 May 1917 (cost of Railway Warrant, London-Manchester). Proceeded overseas to France, 10 February 1918; rejoined unit, in the field, 16 February 1918. Wounded in action, 22 August 1918 (gun shot wound, left ear), and admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, and discharged to duty same day.
