'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Le Quesnoy on the 27th October 1918. The enemy put down a heavy barrage on the front line post held by Rifleman Prince's section and an attack became certain. Rifleman Prince and Rifleman Peat seeing this moved to a flank with the Lewis gun from where they where they were able to bring flanking fire to bear on the enemy's advancing troops. They inflicted many casualties on the enemy and captured one prisoner. Later the enemy renewed his attack in greater numbers and was again beaten off by these Lewis gunners. The courage and devotion to duty and skilful handling of the gun alone made it possible to beat off the attacks.'
