Enlisted with rank of private and posted to D Company, 14th Reinforcements, Trentham Camp, Upper Hutt, 8 March 1916. Proceeded overseas from Wellington on board HMNZT 'Maunganui', 26 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 9 June 1917; admitted to 77th Field Ambulance and transferred to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 10 June 1917 (gun shot wound left forearm); admitted to No. 32 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 13 June 1917. Evacuated to England on board HMHS 'St Patrick' and admitted to No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 16 June 1917. Transferred to New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 1 August 1917. Classified unfit by Medical Board due to the amputation of the fourth and fifth fingers on his right hand as a child and placed on New Zealand Roll, Hornchurch, 10 September 1917. Transferred to New Zealand Discharge Depot, Torquay, 11 September 1917.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board HMNZT 'Tainui', 2 November 1917.

Disembarked Wellington, 4 January 1918.

Discharged no longer physically fit for war service due to pre-enlistment disability, 31 January 1918.
