'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, in the front line between Gommecourt and Hebuterne. On the 20th July 1918 during an attack on the enemy positions he was in charge of a bombing patrol which worked its way by continuous bombing down an enemy sap and killed 5 of the crew of a machine gun and captured the machine gun. During the same operation he rendered invaluable assistance in the consolidation of the captured positions. On the 24th July he showed the greatest bravery and resource in leading and fighting on the occasion of a patrol in daylight penetrating 600 yards along an enemy trench until stopped by a straight stretch of 40 yards commanded by an enemy machine gun. During the passage of the patrol these blocks of timber, iron, and wire had to be broken through under enemy rifle and bomb fire and this NCO in addition to his gallantry showed the utmost determination and resourcefulness in overcoming difficulties, and undoubtedly inspired those with him with all these qualities. He showed an utter disregard for his personal safety and contributed largely to the success of the operation.'
