Source: London Gazette Date: Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For most excellent work since the arrival of the Battalion in France last April particularly so on 15th September 1916 when he showed great gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack on Flers, after the 1st Battalion, 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade had gained its objective, and the 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade were held up on their left, although wounded, he organised a small party of ten and took Flers trench capturing over 100 prisoners. This officer also did excellent work from 15th September to 3rd October. His example was a great
incentive for his men and the value of his work cannot be overestimated.'
