Military Medal 'Operations: British Front Line opposite Beaumont Hamel, 26th March 1918 and subsequent days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During these operations Lance Corporal Poultney was employed as a Company Cook. On 5th April 1918 and the following day this NCO prepared hot food for the men of his Company under very heavy shell fire. He had frequently to proceed some considerable distance to draw water and collect firewood under heavy shell fire. It was by his conscientious behaviour and total disregard for his personal safety that the men were able to have hot food, which materially assisted towards their comfort, and naturally kept up their spirits.'
